I’m doing a little decorating and am buying some of the items online at Home Depot. You can buy online, have things shipped to your house for free and, if something doesn’t work, you can return to a Home Depot store for a full refund. Anyway, I know that I posted recently that I would be buying gift cards for 5X points over saving some money in order to replenish my miles account. But, it turns out that I’d rather save 9% – 11% on my purchases. That’s the discount on Home Depot gift cards at Cardpool (see sidebar) and Giftcardbin. I’ve noticed that discounts tend to be higher in the months following Christmas. How is a good time to stock up on cards for places you know you’ll be shopping at.
If the discount was only 6% – 7%, I think I’d go with buying gift cards at an office supply store for the 5X points. But, I can’t resist the bigger discounts (9% – 20%) I’m seeing online these days. On average, I save close to 10% on the cards I’ve purchased. It adds up to many $100s/year.
