I don’t post much about clipping coupons. But I do go through the inserts that come every weekend. And I usually find a couple coupons to clip. Today, for example, I clipped one for $1 off three boxes of Kellogg’s cereal. You may know, from previous posts, that we are BIG consumers of Kellogg’s cereals.
Under no circumstances am I interested in being an extreme couponer. I have nothing against it, but a) it doesn’t suit my personality; and b) I think it leads to buying stuff that you don’t really want or need. Even if you get it for free, what’s the point? Plus, it looks like a full time job!
Anyway, today I went to the library to pick up Happier at Home by Gretchen Rubin. But the library wasn’t open for another 20 minutes, so I dashed next door to King Soopers. I should have known when the library opened – but at least I got some shopping done and won’t have to go again until later in the week.
I had the $1 off Kellogg’s cereal coupon with me. As well, King Soopers had a deal where, if you buy four participating cereals, you get a gallon of free milk. I got three Kellogg’s Bran Flakes to satisfy the coupon. The Post Grape Nuts were on sale AND a participating item AND I just happened to finish my box this week. So, I grabbed one of those. Now I had four participating cereals.
When I got to the milk section, I went for the most expensive brand they have. I usually buy the cheapest, but since all of the brands qualified, except the organic ones, I picked the most expensive.
I also bought some Barilla macaroni and some frozen chicken (which was ALSO on sale for a $1 off), since I had coupons for both. Other items I got that were on sale included steel cut oats, avocado (the biggest I could find), shredded cheese, Lean Pockets, cauliflower, Greek yogurt, and goat cheese.
In fact, the only things I bought that weren’t either on sale or “couponed” were bananas, pecan bits, Romaine lettuce, mushrooms and some condensed milk for my Vietnamese coffee.
My total bill came to $56.79. I saved $12.83 or 18%. Certainly not a stellar savings day, but these were all things I needed or would need shortly. If I hadn’t clipped the coupons AND used my Soopers card AND specifically chose items that were on sale, I would have paid more than I did.
And why would I want to do that?!
